So you’re interested in using essential oils. I applaud your desire to live a happy and healthy life full of fragrant expressions! Now, how can you start using essential oils? A carrier oil is probably your first step to using EO’s. Carrier oils are dense lipids which blend well with essential oils. There are tons of carrier oils to choose from! I will be discussing a few carrier oils you may want to use for specific purposes to use your essential oils with.
Swanson Vitamins made a great list of carrier oils you can use with your CPTG essential oils. Every single one of those are my personal favorites, but I also wanted to add a few more to that list. So below are a list of my personal top 10 favorite carrier oils to use with essential oils. Criteria for this list: Viscosity, Clarity (ability to stain or not), Multi-Tasking and skin type.
My Personal Top 10
10. Rosehip Oil – This carrier oil is great for normal to oily aging skin. It’s considered a dry oil, so it absorbs quickly into the layers of the skin and it contains vitamins A and C. Some rosehip oils contain vitamin E to preserve it from going rancid quickly, so please check the ingredients carefully that there aren’t any preservatives added and keep it away from direct sunlight. I prefer to use this oil for nightly use in combination with jojoba or marula oil since I have normal to dry skin.
9. Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil – According to Mercola.com, this carrier oil is great for aging skin due to its vitamin A,C,E complex as well as Omega 3,6,7,9. However, you should still dilute this oil with another lighter oil like coconut oil because of its thicker viscosity. It also has a red orange hue, so again be mindful of stains. This is a particularly nice carrier oil to repair summertime skin damage.
8. Olive oil – Best to use filtered, organic and extra virgin. Is very dense and viscous, so it works well for very dry skin. Be mindful that it has a darker green hue which may stain light colored clothing. If using olive oil for dry hair, I recommend only using it on the tips mixing it with an essential oil to lighten the viscosity and heat drying it to penetrate deep into the hair shaft.
7. Marula oil – Runs on the lighter side, so it’s great for normal to oily skin types. Since my skin type is more on the Kapha/Vata side, I would choose this for a summer evening. It has a light yellow tint so it won’t stain light colored clothing.
6. Avocado Oil – This thick oil is really nourishing for the tips of the hair and people with dry skin. A lovely wintertime carrier oil with a light green hue.
5. Sweet Almond oil – A thicker and very light colored oil which is fantastic for dry skin, especially on the face. This is my winter savior oil which I know I can find readily in the pantry section of supermarkets. However, always choose organic.
4. Grapeseed oil – This is a lighter viscous oil, similar to olive oil, but not as greasy, so it’s good for normal to very dry skin. This carrier oil has a light green hue, but is much lighter in color than olive oil. Great for cuticles especially, but can be used on face and body.
3. Argan oil – Is light enough for face and hair, but may be too dense for oily skin or summer daytime moisture. This carrier oil has a brighter yellow to orange hue that may stain clothing, but because I reserve this precious oil for face and hair, it’s never been an issue. It may however if you use it on the body with light colored clothing.
2. Jojoba oil – Jojoba oil is probably the most similar in constitution to the oils of human skin and thus is pleasant for all skin types. Organic jojoba oil has a light to medium viscosity, so it penetrates the skin rather quickly, especially for Vata (dry) skin types. I prefer to use this oil on the body and face. Organic jojoba oil has a bright yellow hue which could possibly stain clothing, however I have never had an issue with staining even on light colored clothing.
1. Organic EVCO (extra virgin coconut oil) – An all around stellar oil for face and body. The viscosity is light and slightly cooling, so it’s great for summer time moisture. Clarity is completely white and clear when liquid, so it won’t stain even the whitest of clothing. And when you’re looking for bang-for-your-buck, coconut oil is number one. You can cook with it, bake with it, eat it strainght, melt into beverages or use it as skincare. It’s great for Pitta and Yang skin types, which means it’s good for hot and oily skin.
DIY Moisturizing Skin Soother Recipe
4 drops of Melaleuca Essential Oil
4 drops of Cedarwood Essential Oil
4 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
Fill the rest with Organic Filtered Olive Oil
Blend together in a 15 ml bottle using a dropper bottle cap since olive oil is very viscous and will be difficult to pour out with a regular essential oil cap.
