Top 5 Essential Oils for Internal Spring Cleaning

Spring is officially in full swing! In Ayurvedic medicine, every change of season should be a time of transitioning, and this entails shedding the old to make way for the new. That means more targeted detoxing is preferred during the week of a season change. Strategic areas you should focus detoxing are the lungs, kidneys, liver, colon and blood.

A gentle way to detoxify is by using essential oils topically on certain parts of the body. You can amplify detoxification with additional skin brushing before application. Dry skin brushing helps to move lymph fluid and boosts blood circulation. A true winner for boosting detoxification.

  1. Grapefruit to Detox the Liver
The liver is the most important detoxifying organ! It is responsible for detoxing everything in our toxic world from the environment to the foods we consume. CPTG grapefruit essential oil is such a strong liver detoxifier that you must be mindful not to ingest this oil close to taking prescription medication. However, using it topically performs a gentle detox you can safely apply daily.
Liver Detox Protocol: Skin brush from feet to neck in the direction towards the heart before showering. Dilute grapefruit essential oil with a carrier oil and apply on the skin above the right rib cage, over the liver. Apply nightly before bedtime daily.
  2. Juniper to Detox the Kidneys
The kidneys are responsible for filtering all the liquid elements in the body. That means urine, sweat, saliva, tears, discharge, puss, breast milk, amniotic fluid, etc. Winter is also the time of the kidneys, which means the kidneys work overtime during this season. It could be tricky to apply essential oils on your back, so I recommend using a roller ball bottle for application.
Kidney Detox Protocol: Skin brush before your daily shower. Combine CPTG juniper berry essential oil with a carrier oil such as jojoba in a 10ml roller bottle, apply directly above the kidneys located on both sides of the the mid spine and try to massage gently in circular motions towards the heart, not away. Apply after your nightly shower or before bedtime.
  3. Thyme to Detox the Lungs
The lungs are responsible for metabolizing oxygen in order to provide energy to ever cell of your body, then detoxes it into carbon dioxide when you exhale. Josh Axe of explained in an essential oils summit how thyme can regenerate mucosal lining of the lungs in order to support healthy respiratory function. Detoxifying the lungs also means less airborne illnesses which can be very common during the winter and spring seasons.
Lung Detox Protocol: Use an an essential oil air diffuser and add a few drops of thyme. Diffuse throughout the night while sleeping.
  4. Geranium to Detox the Colon
The colon is responsible for storing waste matter that was metabolized by the organs above in order to be excreted out of the body daily. If we do not excrete waste daily every morning, you are at a higher risk of re-intoxicating yourself due to toxic waste lingering in the colon for long periods of time. This excess waste puts extreme pressure on every organ in the body to work overtime. In order for essential oils to reach the intestines adequately, it’s preferred to use an enteric coated capsule in order for it to bypass the harsh acids of the stomach.
Colon Detox Protocol: Combine 3 to 4 drops of coconut/olive oil with 1 to 2 drops of CPTG geranium essential oil into an empty enteric coated capsule. You can also freeze the pre-made capsule in order to ensure the capsule will be intact as it goes through the stomach.
  5. Cilantro to Detox the Blood
The blood is what transports heat, vitamins, minerals and toxins to every part of the body. CPTG cilantro essential oil in particular is known for removing heavy metals in the body which we may be subjected to daily unbeknownst to us. Cooking pans, aluminum antiperspirants, aluminum foil, air pollution, cheap jewelry, mercury amalgam teeth fillings, braces, etc. can all leach heavy metals into our blood stream. Heavy metals will then lodge into our tissues, especially fatty tissue where they can linger for long periods, thus accumulating over time. This can cause a whole host of health complications, especially neurological disorders. Many people have a heavy accumulation of metals in the body which should not be released all at once due to toxicity, so it is extremely important to go slow and steady with detoxing heavy metals.
Blood Detox Protocol: Skin brush from feet to neck in the direction towards the heart before showering. Dilute cilantro essential oil with a carrier oil and apply on the feet before bedtime daily. You can also add one drop of CPTG cilantro essential oil in a cup of warm filtered water once a week for a stronger effect, however be mindful of prescription medication and/or a weak immune system, in which case stick to topical application only.

Mindful Oil Massage 101: Breasts

Have you ever heard of spa’s offering breast massages? Or how about your doctor recommending a self breast massage? If you’re in China, this type of massage is quite a common service offered to women in many reputable spas. Let me just say, as a person who comes from a culture where massages get a bad rep and are rarely frequented (mainly due to cost), there’s nothing sexual about this massage, and if you do it to yourself, it’s free! It’s for women’s health and well-being.

Breast Massage Benefits
In Chinese medicine, massaging the breasts helps to drain toxins from the lymph and moves stagnant Qi. Doing a self-breast massage frequently can result in more balanced hormones, less painful periods and overall balance of your lunar cycle. Not to mention preventing diseases and certain cancers if done on a regular bases with the appropriate essential oils.

The breasts are part of a woman’s reproductive system like the ovaries and uterus. When the reproductive system is off balance, it can usually be traced back to stagnation in the liver. The liver is responsible for detoxifying, cleaning the blood and metabolizing hormones, then dumping that metabolized waste into fecal matter. In the end, we just excrete it from the body and maintain homeostasis. Massage can dislodge some of that stagnation. However, altering the diet by eliminating foods you can’t digest and limiting alcohol consumption are still going to be the most effective at moving liver stagnation.

The Right Oils for the Right Time
Geranium and myrrh essential oils are always a great choice for a breast massage anytime. However, adding certain other essential oils to this blend will help to further balance this delicate dance of complicated hormones. Some women require more estrogen, while others require more progesterone.

Estrogen tends to have a more cooling effect on the body and it promotes build up of the uterine lining. Certain essential oils such as sweet fennel and clary sage promote estrogen. If you or your family have a history of estrogen dominant related health conditions, use progesterone promoting essential oils instead to counterbalance the over production of estrogen.

Progesterone tends to have a more warming effect and helps shed the uterine lining every month. Essential oils of thyme and sandalwood promote progesterone, so if you have very minimal bleeding, with less than a 7 day menstrual cycle, then add these essential oils to your breast massage.

Top 5 Essential Oils for Yang Constitutions

Hello my dashing readers!

On my last blog post, I wrote about my top 5 essential oils for Yin constitution types. Now I will be sharing with you my favorites for Yang constitution types. Yang in traditional Chinese medicine means masculine, hot, sun, expanding, dry and the color black. As you would expect, the complete opposite of Yin is feminine, cold, moon, contracting and wet. There are many more characteristics of both, but these are the fundamental basics. So you’ll notice that many of these essential oils are favorites among male users.

  1. Melaleuca provides cooling relief for hot, itchy skin conditions. It’s also a great natural alternative for minimizing acne than its chemical cousin benzoyl peroxide. Red and inflamed skin conditions are classic manifestations of excessive heat expanding up and out, and thus appears on the skin.
  2. Lemon is very moistening and cooling, perfect for the hot and dry qualities of Yang constitution types. It’s refreshingly clean scent will definitely be delightful in a cup of water. Add real lemon juice for extra cooling hydration.
  3. Peppermint is a great one for Yang types, especially during the summer. Use this on areas that sweat most for instant and lasting freshness, just be sure to dilute since this can cause skin sensitivity, especially for Yang constitution types. This essential oil is also fantastic internally for fiery digestive issues like diarrhea.
  4. Juniper Berry supports healthy kidney function which are responsible for all the water production in the body. Water is super important for balancing Yang constitutions because it helps to regulate heat. This essential oil also works especially well for people with blue eyes and for skin.
  5. White Fir are coniferous trees that grow in cold, snowy regions. It’s quite easy to see how Yang constitution types would enjoy a region like this because it balances excessive heat. Excess heat is also known to make you feel lethargic, on the contrary, white fir helps to empower you and boost energy.

Top 5 Essential Oils for Yin Constitutions

Screen Shot 2016-03-04 at 10.16.05 AM.png

Ni hao lovely readers!

I have a deep admiration for Chinese medicine since living here in China. To me it feels almost like a lifestyle than a course of treatment, however it is great for that as well. Yin and Yang are at the core principles of Chinese medicine. Yin Constitution means feminine, moon, night, cold, wet and the color white. That is to put it simply, because Yin consists of much more.  And just like eye color, certain essential oils are more appropriate than others based on their bodily constitution. So here are my top 5 favorite essential oils for Yin constitution types based on traditional Chinese medicine.

Geranium is a dry essential oil which is why it works nicely for this constitution. It can help to draw out of dampness. An example of excess moisture is when the skin feels cold and moist, even during the summer months. This essential oil is also known as “the poor man’s rose” because of it’s resemblance to rose, however much more agreeable to the wallet, of which floral oils are generally very balancing to feminine needs.

Ginger is the holy grail for Yin imbalances in TCM. Ginger is heaty and sweet, so it balances inner coldness of Yin types. It’s especially useful during the lunar cycle for alleviating abdominal cramps. This oil should be diluted on the skin with heavier carrier oils like grapeseed or olive oil due to ginger’s spicy nature. One drop of ginger oil in a cup of hot molasses tea can also help to boost body temperature.

Myrrh has hot, dry, smoky properties which again, helps to balance excess cold and moisture that Yin types can have imbalances with. When the humidity is high and skin feels cool and moist to the touch, blending myrrh essential oil with a light oil makes a delightfully light moisturizer. It’s also a very important essential oil for tonifying the liver, which the liver is responsible for metabolizing hormones.

Cinnamon is another warming oil with immune boosting properties to help protect from seasonal threats during the most vulnerable time for Yin types, winter. People with cold constitutions can suffer from stagnation of many types, and cinnamon oil assists with blood circulation.

Lavender’s light and powdery aroma can definitely balance cold and dampness of Yin types, especially during rainy seasons. Those with Yn imbalance can experience heavy water retention in the joints and face. Yin types also have a tendency to have high energy and high anxiety. Lavender is brilliant for calming anxiety.

Top 4 Essential Oils for Oral Hygiene

In Chinese medicine, our teeth are connected to meridians which correspond to organs of the body and even emotions! In alopathic dentistry, it’s been well known that gum disease has been linked to heart disease due to arterial plaque. Taking care of all aspects of the mouth is incredibly important for good overall health and well being.

As you may already be guessing, I take a more natural and holistic approach to my oral hygiene regimine. I personally stay away from fluoride which has been linked as a neurotoxin and environmental pollutant. A more natural approach would be to use bentonite clay powder in your toothpaste to remineralize teeth and prevent cavities. Not having cavities, means I’m also not exposed to mercury amalgam from fillings which affects the immune system.

As of this day, I have yet to to experience a cavity, so I don’t know. Maybe what I’m doing is working. Adding a mineral powder to my toothpaste, essential oils to my mouth rinse water and occasionally whitening them with a charcoal paste (recipe below) seems to be working. It’s also not as pain staking as many would think. It may take a few noticable steps or two in the begining, but then it just becomes a part of daily routine when you already have these products in a convenient location.

Here are my top 4 oral hygiene essential oils

#4 Lemon CPTG essential oil helps to brighten and clean teeth while also being pretty useful at whitening. I combine lemon oil with activated charcoal powder and another ingredient which you can find out in the DIY teeth whitening paste recipe below.

#3 Peppermint CPTG essential oil
is a classic ingredient for breath freshening. It does so by killing bacteria and providing a cool minty flavor. I’m particularly fond of using peppermint tooth paste in the morning for a gentle wake up. I say gentle because my next essential oil is anything but that it feels sometimes.

#2 Clove Bud CPTG essential oil
is a very strong and spicy oil that is a well-known aid for soothing tooth and gum aches. That strong spicy flavor is why it also kills bad oral bacteria. However, be gentle when first using this essential oil for oral health because it is quite strong. I suggest putting 1 drop on your L/R ring finger then dabbing that finger in a targeted area of oral concern. To rinse out afterwards, use my number one favorite below.

#1 Myrrh CPTG essential oil has strong cleansing properties, especially for the mouth. It’s also quite gentle compared to other well-known oral hygiene essential oils which have strong bold flavors. Add a drop of myrrh to your waterpik device using warm water and your biological/holistic dentist will surely be impressed.

Sleep Smarter Using Essential Oils

Hello lovely readers!

Can you imagine a life without adequate sleep? When I was young, I was truly an insomniac, lying in bed trying to sleep, but just tossing and turning all night instead. It was almost impossible for me to fall asleep, and sleep soundly throughout the night at that was even more rare.

When we consistently get good quality sleep, the better our motor functions and memory will be. I’m sure many of you know that foggy headed feeling we can get after pulling an all-nighter working on something urgently. It’s incredibly dangerous especially if you’re at the wheel of a moving vehicle like a car or truck. In my home county of Hudson in New Jersey, a child and her father were killed by a man who had not slept in 26 hours and was running on 10 Aderall prescription drugs at the time of the incident. Not sleeping, can certainly be deadly! Take a look at this sleep deficit case study from the Harvard Business Review

Maintaining good sleeping habits also helps maintain a healthy weight. No sleep means an over build-up of toxins. Those toxins have to go somewhere, and that somewhere can be your fat cells with the right genetic predispositions. Toxins especially love the brain. This is why when we get little sleep we feel so foggy-headed. When you get 7-8 hours of solid deep sleep, weight should also be less of an issue since sleep helps to eliminate toxins from being stored in fat cells.

Thank goodness, that is not me anymore. I became very serious about getting good quality sleep, but it meant making some adjustments, for example my dinner time. During the work week, I follow a Chinese dinner time schedule which is 5:30pm. For many, that may be very early, but the digestive system needs at least 4 hours to fully digest a meal, which means I’ll start getting sleepy at around 9:30-10pm. That’s perfect! By the time I get ready for bed it’s the perfect time to sleep, at around 10:30-11pm max on a work day. I am now happy to say that I am a morning person! Another added lifestyle adjustment I made to my routine was incorporating herbal tinctures and essential oils. I diffuse certain calming essential oils in my bedroom, I put a couple of drops of essential oil on my pillow, I use oils topically and if I really can’t fall asleep by midnight or later, I use an herbal sleep tincture. It’s quite a delight now to get some sleep I would say. I wouldn’t trade that for anything!

Here are some of the best essential oils for getting a good nights sleep. And at the bottom, you’ll find my evening bedtime ritual which could possibly get some getting used to, but for a good night’s sleep and good health, it’s worth it!

A Great Night’s Sleep Routine
1. Dinner from 5:30-6:00pm
2. Shower or bath at 10:00pm
3. After bathing, apply dōTERRA Serenity blend and vetiver with carrier oil on the shoulders, back of the neck and temples.
4. Spray or apply magnesium oil (not an essential oil, rather a transdermal magnesium supplement) with cedarwood on the feet and legs. If you have sensitive skin, blend with a carrier oil like jojoba.
5. Fill a water diffuser with a few drops of sleep essential oils like juniper berry, lavender and marjoram to diffuse in the bedroom while you sleep.
6. Get to bed and sleep by 11:00pm for better productivity the following day.

10 Reasons for Making the Switch

Ni hao readers!

Being mindful of the products you use on your skin and body every day, I feel, is very important. Our world is inundated with chemicals in the air, food and water. But when you’re home, you shouldn’t have to worry about any of that. That’s precisely why essential oils are so useful everyday. You can add them to your dental care routine, haircare and skincare products, cleaning products, air purifying agents, supplements, you name it! So, I’ve compiled a top 10 list for reasons why you should make the switch to using essential oils.

Top 10 Reasons for Switching to Essential Oils

The Use of Essential Oils from the Microbiome Medicine Summit

10. To let go of those napalm hand sanitizers. Essential oils are naturally disinfectant, but not only that, they are intelligent disinfectants. What does that mean? They know what bugs are the good guys and which are the bad guys, but especially CPTG essential oils let the good guys flourish and keep the bad ones in check.

The Effects of Unsafe Personal Care Products from the Microbiome Medicine Summit

9. To swap hormone and thyroid disrupting perfumes and colognes for pure essential oils. Perfumes and colognes are supposed to attract mates and enhance desire, but chemicals from department store brands actually disrupt sex hormones and can be the cause for mood swings and hormonal disorders. CPTG essential oils promote hormonal balance and smell incredibly vibrant.

8. For new stress management techniques to promote chilled out vibes. Stress alone can cause numerous health problems, and many times we facilitate that stress in our own minds! CPTG essential oils are a brilliant new way for balancing stress. I’m going to use the example of driving. I see a lot of stress occurring there, so pack some lavender or lemongrass essential oil and use a car diffuser or simply massage it on your neck before driving to promote tranquility.

The Use of Essential Oils from the Microbiome Medicine Summit

7. To promote good skin microbiota. Your skin is full of diverse microbiota from bacteria to fungi, all of which live on every part of our body. When the microbiota are healthy, so are you. This may seem like a new concept to some, but according to the Microbiome medicine summit, this medicine is real and flourishing. It can protect us from infections if we cut ourselves because good skin biota prevent bad from flourishing. Using CPTG melaleuca essential oil on a minor wound for example, will help heal it exponentially better and safer than it’s petrochemical cousin Neosporin.

6. To purify odors in the home from cooking and other lifestyle habits. Indoor air pollution is worse than outdoor air pollution since there is much less circulation indoors than out. Not to mention purifying the air of germs that cause seasonal illness is a plus. A water diffuser is great for larger rooms and is useful for winter and summer seasons since it acts as a mild humidifier. A great diffusor for smaller rooms with heavy moisture like kitchens and bathrooms are burner diffusers which uses a tea light candle. They both create a really calming mood in a space.

5. To increase the strength of your immune system to prevent those cold and flu bugs. You can go the vaccine route or you can go the less invasive essential oils route. I’d rather slather on beautifully scented oils that make my skin look great than jab my veins with, I guess let me stop there before I get my door kicked in. If you catch a cold more than four times a year, using CPTG essential oils topically and a certain few internally, can help boost your immune system to naturally defend yourself from seasonal threats.

4. To save the integrity of your gut. You can take certain essential oils internally such as ginger, peppermint and oregano for this reason. You can either add essential oils in a veggie enteri-capsule blended with extra virgin coconut oil, add it to a cup of hot water or, like I taught one of my clients to do, put a drop in your organic non-pasteurized yogurt for an amazing burst of flavor.

3.The liver cannot detoxify if you don’t sleep, and essential oils can help you sleep better. Lavender, chamomile, marjoram, vetiver, juniper berry, these are just a few essential oils that help to promote a good nights sleep. You can diffuse it in the bedroom, put a couple drops on the corners of your pillow and/or put it on your skin like the temples, back of the neck and feet.

2. To ditch those industrial cleaning chemicals for brighter solutions. Citrus oils like lemon, bergamot, lime and grapefruit make amazing cleaning oils and are powerful energizing mood lifters which makes daunting tasks like cleaning the bathroom a pleasant and, dare I say, enjoyable experience! Just add a few drops directly to your natural cleaning products like baking soda or vinegar, or directly drop the essential oils to the surface being cleaned. Many people think that essential oils are greasy but they’re not at all. They work best for therapeutic purposes on the skin mixed with oil, but they’re not greasy, so they’re effective to clean with.

The Use of Essential Oils from the Microbiome Medicine Summit

1. To let go of our dependance of toxic endocrine disrupting chemicals in mass produced skincare and haircare products. There are tons, TONS of congesting petrochemicals in skincare, it’s absolutely dumbfounding how we have surrendered our trust and well-being to these companies. I am shocked at the list of ingredients I see in everything from baby products to feminine care products. You can replace every single one of those toxic products with easy, natural DIY recipes using essential oils. Not just that, but it’s genuinely fun! Change up your skincare with the seasons as the weather changes and formulate different recipes for day and night. Essential oils can be incredibly personalized to each individual’s personal needs, and that’s great! We’re all different, with different needs and wants. Essential oils give you the power to do just that whenever need be.

DIY Cleaning Abrasive Recipe
Baking soda
15 drops of Lemon essential oil

Mix these ingredients together, preferably in a glass container so the essential oil doesn’t corrode the container. Use it to scrub surfaces like bathtubs and sinks. Combine this with vinegar to create a powerful cleaning solution for any surface.
