The Fragrance Loophole

In the most recent summit on Natural Cancer Prevention, they mentioned a wonderful topic about the elusive ingredient “fragrance” IT IS EVERYWHERE! You can barely escape it’s path when it comes to personal care products. It’s in everything from the obvious perfumes and colognes to even personal care products that proclaim they’re “unscented” An oxymoron in ever scents (pun intended)! And many times, where there is fragrance, there are other carcinogenic ingredients such as triclosan, parabens and phthalates.

Why is this ingredient “fragrance” so elusive? Well, do you know what fragrance really is? None of us do, except for the proprietary inventors of this ingredient. It can truly be ANYTHING. Or how Well + Good explained it, a complicated cocktail of many confidential ingredients. Personal care product companies such as Proctor & Gamble don’t have to disclose what the ingredient “fragrance” actually is on its ingredient list because the U.S. FDA has a self-regulatory policy for personal care products. They can keep the ingredient “fragrance” a proprietary secret from the public, and due to self-regulation, those ingredients that make up “fragrance” could be nasty carcinogenic chemicals. Many people tend to use fragrances from infancy, meaning they get a lifelong exposure to these toxins.

To make matters a bit worse, fragrance is not the only elusive ingredient. Campaign for Safe Cosmetics recommends looking out for the ingredients parfum, perfume, essential oil blend and aroma as well since they all fall under that elusively unregulated category of potentially toxic ingredients. Rarely have a I seen even one ingredient listed on a perfume or cologne bottle/box. They only ever mention top and base notes, but what are these products truly made of? Something smells fishy if you ask me.

Essential oils are pure plant essences which work synergistically with our bodies.

To make life easier, safer and smell a whole lot better, stick with using pure therapeutic grade essential oils in your daily life and you can obviously use them in place of synthetic perfume or cologne. They have such a vivid and potent aroma that last longer on the skin when blended with a viscous carrier oil. Plus, you have the added benefit of essential oils being beneficial to all parts of the body, from our blood to our cells.

How Essential Oils Work

Essential oils are uniquely fascinating plant substances. And here you thought they were just “pretty” scents, but actually they are much more than that! People do seem to understand how essential oils work on an emotional level, simply because when we smell them, it livens and brightens our mood. Our mood can change dramatically by just smelling essential oils, making us become instantly brighter and more relaxed. However, something else is going on deep inside the body when we use essential oils. Depending on how we use them, it can provide us with an even greater benefit that we may not notice or feel.

Interestingly, an essential oil is not even an oil at all. They are called oils mainly because they are lipid (fat) soluble rather than water soluble. Essential oils evaporate quickly, especially with the presence of heat, so to get the maximum benefits, it’s preferred to use them with carrier oils when applied topically. Many people use essential oils topically for transdermal penetration because anything that we put on our skin gets absorbed into the bloodstream through our vast amount of pores. Using a carrier oil sends a steady stream of molecules into the blood stream compared to neat (or undiluted) application which sends a rapid flood of essential oil molecules into the blood.

When you smell an essential oil, those volatile molecules contain particles so nano in size, they can even cross the blood-brain barrier. Not many substances on the planet can do that. This is one of the reasons why when our olfactory senses become stimulated by these molecular substances, our mood can instantly change. Every essential oil also has a different chemical makeup of constituents that make it beneficial for different purposes. For example, lavender essential oil contains linalyl acetate which helps to induce a feeling of relaxation and calm. Too much of this constituent coursing through our bodies however, can create the opposite effect, thus stimulating our nervous system to the point where it prevents us from falling asleep. This is what we mean by essential oils being potent substances, because more is not necessarily better.

Essential oils work even at an intracellular level by oxygenating, and literally excreting, toxins from our cells because they can penetrate through the cellular wall membrane. This is why many essential oils have antioxidant benefits. Clove essential oil in particular has the most ORAC (antioxidant) units than any other substance, even food! Myrrh essential oil is a bit far behind at second highest. Due to their powerful properties of penetrating the human body, it is imperative to always use CPTG quality essential oils to receive the maximum, and safest, benefits.

Top 3 Ways to Use Cedarwood Essential Oil

For Repelling Insects

I love being outdoors and getting direct sunlight on my skin as much as possible. This is why, I adore summer! But where there is a Yin, there is a Yang. With summer, comes pesky insects. Sometimes, the insects are so bad, it makes me wish I was back in winter, a little. Fortunately, since embarking in this natural lifestyle of using essential oils, I’ve realized how multi-purpose even just one essential oil can be, which is the case for Cedarwood.

Try blending Cedarwood with other bug repelling essential oils and make your own bug repellant! It’s incredibly easy as long as you have all the tools and ingredients, which is to say, is not very many.

I primarily bought cedarwood essential oil to heal skin abrasions and cuts more quickly since it was one of the least expensive essential oils to begin with. Cedarwood is great for treating cuts caused by shaving and manicures. I also love using it for treating blemishes.

Try blending cedarwood essential oil with other skin soothing essential oils to make your own aftershave product. It can be used on any part of the body that you shave to disinfect cuts, calm inflammation and speed up healing.

DIY Aftershave Recipe: use a pump nozzle cap on an empty 30ml bottle (if possible) and make your own soothing aftershave oil. It has a mild depth that’s never overpowering which makes it wonderful to help induce sleep. Like most wood resin essential oils, they pair well with herbs to calm and soothe the nervous system.

I love blending cedarwood with lavender in my diffuser to engulf my bedroom with a deeply relaxing scent that calms my racing thoughts and grounds me to that moment which is, to GET SOME SLEEP and who doesn’t need a relaxing night’s sleep? Don’t have a diffuser? Try making a simple DIY pillow spray.
